We have two different types of Battery Hen rescue types

Annual Battery Hen Adoption Days

These battery hens are rescued at just 18mths of age, just before many many thousands are culled, because they’re no longer as productive (50-60% layers), but wonderful as backyard chookies. It’s a heart wrenching task to go in and carefully take out just a few hundred hens each week, when we know thousands more are culled that same week, but we focus on the lives we can save, which is because of Mother Cluckers committing to adopt these hens.

We rescue and rehome around 2,500 battery hens during these annual adoption days. Around 100 of these girls needs to come back to live with us in our Who Gives A Cluck, Hen Hospitals in Mullumbimby & Brisbane because they didn’t pass the health check.

Floor Girl Rescues

We do mini rescues of ‘floor girls’ from the battery farm throughout the year, leading up to the large annual rescue/adoption days in each location. Floor girls are hens that have escaped (while they do the culling) from the battery cages or sometimes they have been dumped on the floor if they are not well. They are all 18 months or younger of course (as all the hens are culled at just 18mths of age). They are left on the floor without food or water till they die. So our intention is to go as often as possible, rescue these floor girls, bring them back to our hen hospital to health check them. Only healthy ones will be offered for adoption.

We have found that most of the floor girls were escapees, so very healthy, though some have hurt their legs as they fell, so while most heal, some have a permanent limp – still very healthy, not needing any more medical attention from us, but limp, so we do call out for Mother Cluckers who can give a home to these girls too. .

We feel these girls that escaped the cages deserve the good life with our Mother Cluckers so while we cannot be there every day to help these floor girls, we will do our best to get there at least once or twice a month. As you can appreciate the time and travel cost of rescuing 10 girls each time, is prohibitive but for each of those girls it means ever
